Beef Steak with Sweet Potato

Bistek in the Philippines is known as Beef Steak around the world. This is comfort food that we eat in the Philippines growing up and I still miss it once in a while.

This dish is very easy to prepare and you can have a healthy meal by cooking this dish with minimal ingredients easily found in your kitchen.

Beef steak isn’t usually served with sweet potatoes. But I like to mix sweet and savory ingredients in one dish for more wholesome goodness. A blast of flavors indeed!

Preparation time: 30 minutes
Cooking time: 40 minutes
Total: 1 hour 10 minutes

Note: Preparation time includes marinate time and how long do you keep the marinated ingredients in the fridge to let the sauce sits in.


Beef Steak
1 lb. beef sirloin, thinly sliced
Juice from 5 fresh calamansi
1/4 cup low sodium soy sauce
1/2 teaspoon ground black pepper
3 cloves garlic, crushed
1 large onion, sliced into rings
3 tablespoons cooking oil
Salt to taste

Sweet Potato
Orange sweet potato, cut into french fries shape

How to:

1. Peel sweet potato and cut into french fries shape according to your preferred thickness. Deep fry the fries using an air fry. Set aside once done.

2. In a bowl, combine freshly squeezed calamansi juice, black pepper and soy sauce. Add beef and mix until well blended. Add crushed garlic. Put in the fridge ideally for 1 hour to ensure flavor is deeply absorbed. If you have less time, 30 minutes max is okay.

3. To start cooking, in a heated pan with oil, pan fry the beef. Set aside the marinade sauce (you’ll need this later). Stir fry until beef is well cooked. Add in marinade sauce and let it simmer for two minutes.

5. Add fried sweet potatoes and let it boil for 1 minute. Serve hot, garnish with onion rings.
